    A Cormorant

    1          Here before me, snake-head.

2          My waders weigh seven pounds.

3          My Barbour jacket, mainly necessary

4          For its pockets, is proof

5          Against the sky at my back. My bag

6          Sags with lures and hunter's medicine enough

7          For a year in the Pleistocene.

8          My hat, of use only

9          If this May relapses to March,

10        Embarrasses me, and my net, long as myself,

    11        Optimistic, awkward, infatuated

    12        With every twig-snag and fence-barb

13        Will slowly ruin the day. I paddle

    14        Precariously on slimed shale,

    15        And infiltrate twenty yards

16        Of gluey and magnetized spider-gleam

17        Into the elbowing dense jostle-traffic

18        Of the river's tunnel, and pray

    19        With futuristic, archaic under-breath

20        So that some fish, telepathically overpowered,

    21        Will attach its incomprehension

22        To the bauble I offer to space in general.

23        The cormorant eyes me, beak uptilted,

    24        Body-snake low---sea-serpentish.

25        He's thinking: "Will that stump

26        Stay a stump just while I dive?" He dives.

27        He sheds everything from his tail end

    28        Except fish-action, becomes fish,

    29        Disappears from bird,

    30        Dissolving himself

31        Into fish, so dissolving fish naturally

    32        Into himself. Re-emerges, gorged,

33        Himself as he was, and escapes me.

34        Leaves me high and dry in my space-armour,

35        A deep-sea diver in two inches of water.
